Welcome to the homepage of the Research on Optical Sciences, Engineering, and Systems (ROSES) group of the Ateneo Department of Physics and the Ateneo Innovation Center!
AIC-ROSES started in 2017 as a publication-driven, education-by-research model of engaging undergraduate students in the Department of Physics, School of Science and Engineering, Ateneo de Manila University, Philippines. This model was conceptualized and executed by Dr. Benjamin B. Dingel remotely, while in New York as the R&D Director of Nasfine Photonics.
AIC-ROSES established itself as an official research group under the Ateneo Innovation Center in August 2020. Now with ~20 student members and dozens of publications, our group deals with both theoretical and experimental research areas. We study scientific analogues and their implementations in multilayer optics and photonics. We also study optical engineering in microwave photonics, sensing in networks, and photonic integration. Additionally, we have branched out to hybrid optic and electronic systems and mathematical physics methods.
July-August 2025
The Ateneo ROSES Laboratory proudly participated in the 1st Quantum Information, Science, and Technology Conference (QIST 2025) in Cebu, Philippines held last July 30 - August 1, 2025 at the JPark Hotel and Resort in Mactan, Cebu Philippines.
The Ateneo ROSES Lab team submitted a poster presentation showing the lab’s research efforts on Photonic Integrated Circuit (PIC) – an enabling and key technology for Quantum Computing and Communication. Dr. Benjamin Dingel also gave a talk on about Ateneo ROSES Lab quantum research efforts during the Session on “The State of Quantum Research in the Philippines”. He highlights some of the lab’s PIC research efforts on advancing low-cost and niche photonic solutions for Quantum Computing and Communication.

Einstein: A proposed activation function for convolutional neural network (CNN) in image classification and its comparison to ReLU, Leaky ReLU, and Tanh
Abstract: Activation functions (AFs) are integral in enabling convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to perform image classification and recognition effectively. Here, we propose a new AF called "Einstein"— a novel, piecewise, and dynamic AF defined by parameter r ...
